To
Make the Mountains Glad:
An Intergenerational Adventure in Californias High Sierra
Dates: June 22 - 27, 2008 July 20 - 25, 2008 August
10 -15, 2008
Elderhostel / Sierra Club Program Program
Grandparents will have ample opportunities to share their
love of the Great Outdoors with their grandchildren as they hike through fragrant pine
forests and wildflower-strewn meadows, clamber over granite boulders, take refreshing
swims in mountain lakes and perhaps even sleep under the stars. Together theyll
learn and practice basic wilderness survival techniques (foraging for edible plants,
shelter building, orienteering, tracking) as well as Leave-No-Trace wilderness etiquette.
Theyll work side-by-side on a simple daily Lodge chore of their choice and on the
Lodge forest rehabilitation project.
On the crest of Donner Summit theyll witness firsthand
the work of others who came this way in ages past - the mysterious Martis petroglyphs,
rugged emigrant trails and winding stagecoach road, the remarkable China Wall
and incredible Transcontinental Railroad tunnels. Together theyll ride the cable car
tram to Squaw Valleys High Camp and go ice-skating on the Olympic-size rink.
After each days adventures, grandparents and
grandchildren can enjoy each others company in the comfort of our rustic Lodge
without the distraction of television and other electronic gadgetry. Theyll have the
opportunity to read or play musical instruments, do puzzles and play board games, soak in
the large hot tub, roast marshmallows, sing songs around the campfire, and join hands for
the Big Folk Dance. Together they will, in the words of John Muir, make the
mountains glad.
