Successful Fourth Annual Clair Tappaan Fundraiser
Olivia Diaz and Ernie Malamud
(from a submission to the September-October
issues of the UPLIFT, the newsletter of the Sierra Nevada Group)
Over 60 supporters of the Sierra Club at Donner
summit gathered for the 4th Annual CTL fundraiser. People came from many California cities
and towns as well as several people from other states. The August 15-17 dates were
chosen to enjoy the full moon. Lodge General Manager Peter Lehmkuhl led enthusiastic
hikers on moonlight hikes on the Pacific Crest Trail on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Members of the the Sierra Nevada (SNG), Napa and
Yolano groups played important roles in organizing and running the event: donated auction
items, ran the auction, decorated the lodge with flowers, tablecloths and other festive
touches, organized and led hikes. Sherryl Tomboulian and Mountain Fire provided music.
CTL Committee Chairs Olivia Diaz and Diane Boyer
(Napa Group) reported on the state of the lodge. We significantly exceeded our fundraising
goal of $20,000 from donations, participants and the auction and raffle. By the end of
September there will have been over 10,000 visitors (not counting revenues from Hutchinson
Lodge and the back country huts) which, with the boost from the fundraiser, will enable us
to meet the 3rd Quarter September 30 deadline to break even. At this point it looks as if
we may have a small surplus at the end of 2008 3rd quarter.
It is still of utmost importance that all of you
who love our two historic lodges, Clair Tappaan and Hutchinson and the surrounding forests
use the lodge, introduce it to your family and friends, and suggest to local groups -
scouts, churches, schools, what an ideal location it is for their events. |
