GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

Friday, November 20:

"California's Mining Toxic Legacy" Mike Thornton

Nevada County had the most gold extracted of 12 counties.  In 1953 alone 92 tons of gold came out of the Sierra Nevada. The mining process ravaged the downstream water and decimated wildlife and native culture. There are 47,000 mines and very few have been reclaimed. The long term impact of the mercury, arsenic and asbestos have not been addressed with a comprehensive policy, public education or government programs. The Sierra Fund has created a program that has traveled all over California and would like to coordinate government policy, scientific research and concerned citizens in a meaningful long term plan to address health problems and protect natural resources. Mike Thornton is the Mining Project Community Organizer for the Sierra Fund, has been a KVMR radio reporter and is a well informed, dynamic speaker.

Seaman's Lodge is located in Pioneer Park on Nimrod Street in Nevada City.

COMING NEXT YEAR -- Mark your calendars!

JANUARY 15, 2010 WILDERNESS WEEK with the BITNEY COLLEGE PREP HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

This fall 45 high school students, 1 parent and 9 staff members participated in Wilderness Week of which 4 days were spent at Clair Tappaan Lodge. The group participated in Peter Mayfield's Gateway Mountain Center Program.  They hiked and learned about the natural beauty and history of the Donner Summit area. Less than half of the students had previous outdoor experiences in the mountains. The concept of walking to a natural destination met with some resistance that faded as they gained confidence.   Besides having the students experience the outdoors, the program goal was to build community and share time together around a campfire, while climbing and while sharing meals. The additional lessons on carbon sequestration, human history and wetlands made it a remarkable experience.   The last morning the 4 hiking groups made it to the top of Donner Peak and were treated to a glorious view of Donner Lake. The Sierra Nevada Group helped make this possible by using funds from the Wilcher Award, which is used to help youth groups experience the mountain environment.   Do you remember your first outing in the wilderness? Come and hear high school students account of the Sierra through their young eyes.  Seaman's Lodge.  Potluck at 6:30, announcements at 7:15, program at 7:30.  Call Lois 272-4160 if you have questions.

Sunday, November 8 – Spenceville Wildlife and Recreation Area. (1A). Around five miles with only a few hundred feet (at most) of elevation gain. Spenceville is well known as a spring bird and wildflower destination, but the fall and winter can be beautiful as well (summer is a little hot, dry and dusty). We’ll take an exploratory route and search for less-visited sites in the 12,000 acre property. We’ll plan for an easy hike and learn about the wildlife area and its history and management. Leader: Richard Thomas (530) 265-2666, randtthomas@sbcglobal.net.

Sunday, November 22 - Second and Third Divide Trails Loop.  Day Hike (2A) . Carpool to trailhead. We will climb the Third Divide trail to the ridge and intersect the Second Divide Trail. We then will follow Pauley Creek back. The many spur trails will provide the opportunity to choose the right lunch spot. Call for meeting location and time. Leader: Rick Ramos 530-478-1454

Sunday, November 29 – Below the Snow.  Day Hike (2A/B) Join Don Harkin on this 7-mile loop hike in the Salmon Lake/Lock Leven Lake/ 4 Horse Flat area. We'll visit numerous lakes, meadows and upper mountain forest. Snow will force us into a lower, but similar area. Meet at the Rood Center at 9:00 am or the Highway 20/80 Junction about 9:45am. Carpool to trailhead. Call about Nov. 25/26 for weather update. Leader: Don Harkin - (530)265-4048.

Saturday, December 5 – Community Service at Spenceville.  Day Hike (1A) Carpool to trailhead. Cox Creek in the Spenceville Wildlife Area has some old fence and metal that needs to be removed. We can do that and still have time to do some walking in the area. Less than five miles at most. Call Richard at (530)265-2666. Wet weather will likely cancel this event.

Saturday, December 12 -  North Yuba Trail.  Day Hike (2A) Carpool to trailhead. We will hike out the North Yuba Trail, starting at Rocky Rest Campground off Hwy 49, heading up river and then returning to our point of origin for a total distance of about 5-6 miles. Nice views of the river from the trail. Call for meeting location and time. Leader: Melony Vance 530-478-1586

Saturday, December 19 – Buttermilk Bend at Bridgeport.  Day Hike (Easy 1A) We'll take an easy winter walk along the sunny (hopefully) Buttermilk Bend trail to watch, (also hopefully), wild winter water in the South Yuba. Less than four miles on this level trail. Leader: Richard Thomas (530) 265-2666.

Saturday, January 9, 2010 – Canyon Creek Trail.  Day Hike (2A) Carpool to trailhead. This trail follows the North Fork of the Yuba River past Cherokee Creek to Canyon Creek. Canyon Creek is a feeder creek almost as large as the Yuba. The hike has 300 feet elevation gain and is 3.5 miles one way. We will pass through many historic sites and cross a foot bridge across Cherokee Creek. We will view and discuss the impact of the sites with the natural environs. Call for meeting location and time. Leader: Rick Ramos 530-478-1454

After work walks

Thursday, November 19 - Litton Trail. Come shake off the daily grind before you head home for dinner. At 4:45 PM we will meet at the Litton Trail below the fire station on Sierra College Blvd in Grass Valley. This will be approximately 1.5 mile walk along the trail with a loop to the pond at the college, so bring a quarter to feed the fish. Rated 1A. Leader: Rick Ramos 530-478-1454.

Wednesday, December 2 - Newtown Ditch/Road. We'll walk for about an hour on the road if the ditch berm is muddy. Meet at the Rood Center at 4:45. Rated 1A. Leader, Richard Thomas (530) 265-2666.

Thursday, December 10 - Empire Mine The 2 mile trail from the Penstock Parking at the Empire Mine awaits us after the 9 to 5. This gentle trail provides enough uphill to clear your mind and is wide enough to not have to worry about the person behind. We meet at 4:45 PM in the Penstock Parking Lot off Empire Street in Grass Valley. Rated 1A Leader: Rick Ramos 530-478-1454.
