Welcome
to the Sierra Club Seniors!
Don't be put off by the word ŇSENIORÓ in our title. We have
many younger adults joining us on our outings. Click on the buttons to the left
for our scheduled activities. Most of our activities are on week-days, when
trails are much less used, and so much more attractive. We go on ŇhikesÓ, not
walks, which are usually between 4-8 miles. We do go into the upper elevations
at times, but try to limit our climb to 1,000 feet, and travel at a more
leisurely pace than other Sierra Club outings. Do join us, and smell the
flowers or join in our other activities such as potlucks or plays. Singles and
couples welcome. It is not necessary to be a member of the Sierra Club to join
an outing, but you may decide it is well worth your while after meeting with
us.
ABOUT SIERRA CLUB OUTINGS . . .
If you need additional
information about any of the listed activities, call one of the leaders between
9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Remember we are all volunteers so please be considerate
and patient if we donŐt get right back to you. RESERVATIONS ARE NOT NECESSARY
UNLESS SPECIFIED IN THE WRITE UP. All activities - follow the
instructions of the leader. Please donŐt come unless you intend to stay with
the group. No smoking is allowed on our activities. Please be sure you are in
adequate physical condition to undertake the activity you choose. If you are
unsure of the difficulty of the trip or your abilities, check with the leader
before you decide to go. For hikes and day activities, bring lunch, water and
essentials as well as $ for your driver. Wear boots or sturdy shoes. Be sure to
break in hiking boots 3-4 hours on short walks before hiking. Dogs are
generally not allowed on Senior outings. See list ESSENTIALS FOR HIKING
below.
TRANSPORTATION
TO THE TRAILHEAD . . .
Although
the Sierra club believes in the desirability of car pooling, leaders must not
organize car pools. The reason for this is that by doing so, the leader exposes
the Club to a potential $50,000 liability should an accident occur on the way
to the trailhead or on the way home. Any car pool arrangements are private
agreements between the driver and the passengers. Drivers must carry adequate
public liability insurance coverage. Riders are expected, as a matter of courtesy,
to reimburse drivers to cover the transportation expenses of the trip. Sierra
Club Seniors suggests at least $3.00 per hour of driving per passenger.
ESSENTIALS FOR HIKING . . .

Hikes are classified in terms of difficulty by a letter and
a numeral:
Grade 1 - up to
six miles Class A - less
than 1000 feet elevation gain
Grade 2 - six to ten miles Class B - 1000 to 2000 feet elevation gain
The Senior Group does not generally schedule hikes beyond those classified as 2B, and most of them are 1A. Such more challenging hikes are listed in the Bonanza and Singles Schedule. Extended trips are in the Sierra Magazine. Both Bonanza and Sierra Magazine are sent to you if you are a member of the Sierra Club.
