Swainson's
Hawk chicks. These threatened raptors must leave their nest
in July, fatten up in agricultural fields, and then fly thousands
of miles to Mexico and beyond in September. This is a truly
phenomenal species that are region is blessed to protect. Some
500 nesting pairs remain in California and these are primarily
within 50 miles of downtown Sacramento. |
| Baby
Giant Garter Snakes. These shy and reclusive snakes live
in the ditches and drains and narrow channel marshes in the
valley's lowlands, and depend on rice fields for survival. Sierra
Club Mother Lode Chapter is a key litigant in protecting these
snakes from extinction as suburbanization destroys their world. |

Cities
expand into agricultural lands. Protection of natural and
agricultural areas in perpetuity (forever) for wildlife habitat
is absolutely essential to protecting wildlife in our region. |

Tree. Oak forests in our region are a precious resource.
Sierra Club Mother Lode chapter seeks to end destruction of
oak forests for suburbanization. |
| Traffic
Congestion. Traffic congestion results when affordable housing
is not available near jobs. Please see our web page on the Challenge
of Sprawl. Sprawl costs us all, and particularly, it costs
our wildlife of their homes.
