Tahoe Group Appreciation Award:

Irv Coe, Janette Lawson, Nada Vogt and Malcolm Beggs

One of the most important tasks for the Tahoe Area Sierra Club is to keep our members both involved and interested.  Since many of the issues we face at Lake Tahoe involve sophisticated and/or technical issues, we feel it is necessary to educate members of the Tahoe community to be effective advocates for the environment.  To this end we have a monthly meeting open to the public to discuss many important topics.  Our group wants to recognize the unsung workers who make the meetings possible.  These men and women faithfully prepare the meeting room, provide the food and drinks, and clean up our messes month in and out.  It is our honor to say thanks for keeping our club and our public in touch to Irv Coe, Janette Lawson, Nada Vogt and Malcolm Beggs.

Sacramento Group Appreciation Award: Alta Tura

Alta’s involvement in habitat conservation in the Sacramento area began after joining the Audubon Society in the late 1970's. She would eventually become Conservation Chair of the Sacramento Audubon Society, a founding member and current president of the Sacramento Urban Creeks Council, and secretary for Friends of Swainson's Hawk. She serves on the Habitat 2020 committee, the Laguna Creek Watershed Council, the Upper Laguna Creek Collaborative, Alder Creek Stakeholders Group, and the South Sacramento Habitat Conservation Plan steering committee. Of her long-term activism, Alta says, “While I have spearheaded some protests to unwise development projects, I seem to be more effective working on proactive partnership projects and outreach that is non-confrontational.”

Sierra Nevada Group Appreciation Award: Rachel Hillemann

The Sierra Nevada Group would like to recognize Rachel Hillemann as our Group Volunteer Appreciation Award recipient this year.  She has made a truly valuable contribution to our Group over the last five plus years.  Rachel has been the committee chair in charge of recruiting volunteers and organizing the mailing functions of our bi-monthly newsletter, The Uplift.  The task is done with remarkable professionalism, attention to detail and is even considered fun by the volunteer crew.  Imagine folding, tabbing, labeling and filling out the postal paperwork for 1450 newsletters.  In addition Rachel can always be counted on to aid in the chores involved with the Group Membership meetings and other events.  We thank her for her dedication to our Group and the Sierra Club.

Placer Group Appreciation Award: Leslie Warren

Leslie Warren was one of the founding members of the Placer Land Trust, and co-founder of the Placer Nature Center (and its Executive Director since 1991).  She is active with the organization Protect American River Canyons in efforts to preserve the scenic American River Canyon viewscapes. Her home was the setting for a much-needed and very successful Placer Group fundraiser for Clover Valley and Placer Vineyards litigation expenses. Leslie donated a conservation easement on 27 acres of her property along Orr Creek in Christian Valley, consisting of oak woodlands and a spectacular grassy meadow. Our region is very fortunate to have a woman of such passion and action for environmental concerns.
