MEETING
Friday, November 20:
"California's Mining
Toxic Legacy" Mike Thornton Nevada County had the most gold extracted of 12 counties.
In 1953
alone 92 tons of gold came out of the Sierra Nevada. The mining
process ravaged the
downstream water and decimated wildlife and native
culture. There are 47,000 mines and very few have been reclaimed. The
long term impact of the mercury,
arsenic and asbestos have not been addressed with a
comprehensive policy, public education or government
programs. The Sierra Fund
has created a
program that has traveled all over California and would like to
coordinate government policy, scientific research and concerned
citizens in a meaningful long term plan to address health problems
and protect natural resources.
Mike Thornton is the Mining Project Community Organizer for the Sierra Fund,
has been a KVMR radio reporter and is a well informed,
dynamic speaker.
Seaman's Lodge is located in Pioneer Park on
Nimrod Street in Nevada City.

JANUARY 15, 2010 WILDERNESS WEEK with the BITNEY COLLEGE
PREP HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
This fall 45 high school students, 1 parent and 9 staff members participated in Wilderness Week of which 4 days
were spent at Clair Tappaan Lodge. The group participated in Peter Mayfield's Gateway Mountain Center Program.
They hiked and learned about the natural beauty and history of the Donner Summit area. Less than half of the
students had previous outdoor experiences in the mountains. The concept of walking to a natural destination met with some
resistance that faded as they gained confidence.
Besides having the students experience the outdoors, the program goal was to build community and share time
together around a campfire, while climbing and while sharing meals. The additional lessons on carbon
sequestration, human history and wetlands made it a remarkable experience.
The last morning the 4 hiking groups made it to the top of Donner Peak and were treated to a glorious view of Donner
Lake. The Sierra Nevada Group helped make this possible by using funds from the Wilcher Award, which is used to help youth groups experience the mountain environment.
Do you remember your first outing in the wilderness? Come
and hear high school students account of the Sierra through
their young eyes.
Seaman's Lodge. Potluck at 6:30, announcements at 7:15, program at 7:30. Call Lois 272-4160 if you have questions.

February 19, Peter Van
Zant (Field Director, Sierra Watch), "Introduction to
Donner Summit" In the PowerPoint presentation Peter will review the Summit’s unique history and outstanding natural values. The presentation includes a review
of the recent development proposal to cover the Summit with a Colorado style recreation housing development.
Featured is the story of the interest groups that have come together to address the development threat and have developed a series of self-help projects to increase the ambience and economic vitality of Donner Summit.
Sierra Watch is securing conservation victories to protect the places we love. By providing strategic leadership to focused campaigns, we are writing a new chapter in the proud history of conservation in California.
