Wildflowers in High Sierra

Meeting Time:  Sunday, July 5th at 7:30 AM in Sacramento and 8:15 AM in Pollock Pines

IMPORTANT NOTE: Since this is a holiday weekend and because there is a “Meet Up” hiking group destined for this same area about 30 minutes behind us I want to be sure and keep things moving in a timely manner; otherwise, parking at Wood’s Lake could be a problem. Please be ready to go at the scheduled meeting time.

Meeting Place:

Primary: Parking lot at 11th and P Streets in downtown Sacramento
Alternate: Pollock Pines shopping center at intersection of Sly Park Road and Pony Express Trail – NW corner of parking lot (See attached map: Pollock Pines Mtg.jpg)

Outing Leader: Eric Emerson

Contact Email: etemerson@comcast.net

Contact Phone: 707-448-2607

Duration: We should arrive at Woods Lake around 9:45 to 10:00 AM. The hike to our shooting location will take 30 – 40 minutes. We will probably return to the cars sometime between 2:00 and 3:00 PM and that will get us back to Sacramento around 5:00 (unless you chose to make a dinner stop on the way).

Directions: We will drive from the primary meeting place in Sacramento to Pollock Pines to meet the rest of our group. From there we will drive south on Sly Park Road about 4.7 miles to Mormon Emigrant Trail (this can be a hard to find turn with only a small green street sign, but there is a country store called "Slypark Resort" on the right just before the turn). We will go east on Mormon Emigrant for about 35 miles to Hwy. 88.  Then turn left (eastbound) on Hwy 88. Go past Kirkwood. Caples Lake Dam is at approx 12.6 miles. Go past the Caples Lake Dam which is at approximately 12.6. Take the Woods Lake Campground exit (Approx 3.2 miles east of Caples Lake Dam and 1.7 miles west of Carson Pass) If you have gone to Carson Pass at the top of the grade you have gone too far. Follow the paved road 1.5 miles to the campground, then bear left and park in the day-use picnic area. See attached Woods Lake Map for details.

Description: From the picnic area we will hike 1 to 1 ˝ miles along the trail toward Lake Winnemucca. We will reach an open hill side on the east side of the trail that will hopefully be covered with beautiful wildflowers. This is a fairly large area so there will be plenty of room to spread out and we will stay in this area for the duration of the photo shoot. Of course, if you wish to explore further you can sign out at any time.

What To Bring: Lunch or snack items, water, mosquito repellant (they’re bad this year), sun protection, money for carpool drivers, appropriate camera gear and tripods.

Description: From the campground we will hike 1 to 1 ˝ miles along the trail to Lake Winnemucca.
