Mt. Kilimanjaro--View from the Top
By Gilbert Minja
As you may know, Mt. Kilimanjaro is the tallest freestanding mountain on the earth, and one of the world’s largest volcanoes. Located in Tanzania, it may be climbed with no mountaineering experience or special equipment. Thus, at 19,340 feet it is the highest walk up mountain in the world, and goes from tropical rain forest to snow-covered peaks and weather-sculpted glaciers.
Our presenter is Gilbert Minja, who was born and educated in the township of Moshi, Tanzania, which is located at the base of this magnificent mountain. A member of the Chagga Tribe (mountain people), Mr. Minja first climbed the mountain in 1995 with a group of fellow students, and since then has made more than one hundred successful climbs—first as an Assistant Guide, then as the Chief Guide. Experienced, knowledgeable and fully licensed, he has been a Chief Guide since 2000 and will share some of his collected slides with us from the different routes up the mountain.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to view Mt. Kilimanjaro from the top and hear about it from such a charming visitor. Sponsored by De Anna Yee, he will only be here for a short time longer before returning to his native Africa to lead more climbs or expeditions. He is qualified to answer questions about planning your hikes up Mt. Kilimanjaro, going on a safari to the Serengeti/Ngorongoro area, experiencing Zanzibar or visiting the Gombe Chimpanzees made famous by Jane Goodall.
