Midweek hikes in the Groveland/Hwy 120 area (Tuolumne Group)

Each Thursday meet at Mary Laveroni Park, Groveland - May 1, 9:00 a.m.; beginning May 8, 8:00 a.m. - for an approximate 6-mile hike. Day Hike (2B) Angel Island State Park (Singles)

We’ll take the 10 a.m. ferry from Tiburon to Angel Island and then hike to the top of the island at Mt Livermore (Elev. 781’) for a wonderful 360° view. We’ll continue around the island with a visit to the old immigration station at China Cove; the “Ellis Island of the West”. Weather can be changeable so bring layers. Rain Cancels. Easy Urban Bike Ride (Younger Adults)

This is a short, late morning urban bicycle ride that combines 50% city street riding (mostly bicycle lanes) with the Sacramento River and American River bicycle trails. Approx. 12 miles. We will have stops in Old Sacramento, at the new water intake facility on the Sacramento River, and a recent habitat restoration spot. Must wear bicycle helmet. Day Hike (2B) Mount Diablo State Park (Younger Adults)

A very strenuous 8.6-mile loop hike on the seldom visited north side of 3,849’ Mt. Diablo (we won’t be hiking to the summit). Spectacular views. 1,800’ elev. gain. You must be in excellent shape. Bring lunch, 2+ quarts of water, hiking boots and $$ for optional dinner and optional carpooling. Rain cancels. No dogs. Meet 9 a.m. @ 11th & P Street parking lot, downtown Sacramento. Day Hike (1A) Empire Mine State Historic Park and Grass Valley (Singles)

This outing combines an easy hike to see reminders of early gold mining, a tour of a lovely cottage and rose garden, museum, early dinner at a pastie restaurant, and a walk through historic Grass Valley. Total of about 4 miles and about 50’ elev. gain. Bring $$ for the park, cottage tour, and dinner. Bring lunch, water, and other essentials. Come take a 6 mile, 1,100’ elev. gain, wildflower hike in the Marin Headlands. Great views of San Francisco and the Pacific Ocean. Day Hike (2A) S. Fork Yuba State Park

Historic Bridgeport near Grass Valley.  I plan to hike the scenic Buttermilk Bend and Point Defiance Trails along the S. Fork of the Yuba River. This is a 7-mile hike with an 800’ total elev. gain (2A difficulty rating). Starting at the Visitor Center at Bridgeport, we will check out the covered bridge built in 1862. At 251’, it is the longest single span covered bridge in the U.S. We then plan to hike the 4-mile Point Defiance Trail to Englebright Lake up a ½-mile hill to eat lunch at the Pt. Defiance picnic area. We will then hike back down to the covered bridge and then hike three miles (RT) on the nearly level Buttermilk Bend Trail. Dogs OK, on leash only. Meet at the Big Lot parking lot on La Riviera Drive. Take Watt North, exit onto La Riviera Drive, make a right turn and then another quick turn into the Big Lot parking area. Bike Ride (4A) Fish Hatchery to Folsom Lake (Singles)

Ride up to Beals Point at Folsom Lake, and perhaps beyond, from the Fish Hatchery off Hazel Ave and Hwy. 50, along the American River Bike Trail, which is paved. A moderately-paced ride of 18 to 20 miles, with some hills, 750’ elev. gain. We'll have an early lunch or snack at Folsom lake, perhaps walk down to the lake, then ride back down the hill. Great views of Lake Natomas and Folsom Lake. Singletrack "detour" upon request. Bring lunch, water, snacks, tire kit, helmet, and fully-prepared bike, etc. Call for reservations by May 6. Day Hike (1A) Cascade Canal - Nevada County (Seniors)

A 4-5 mile hike. A gentle uphill climb follows the Nevada Irrigation District Cascade Canal through shady woodland. The trail is fairly flat, and wide. From Sacramento meet at 9:30 a.m. east of I-80 at Madison and Date Avenues, in the Office Depot parking lot, close to/behind Boston Market. Re-assemble at 10:15 a.m. in Auburn at Burger King on Lincoln Way, I-80 Foresthill Exit. Bring snack, water, essentials, $$ for lunch in town. Rain cancels. Annual Mother’s Day Hike (2A) Rush Creek Trail (Sacramento)

Day Hike (3B) Euchre Bar to Humbug Bar (Singles)

8 to 12 miles and 1,800’ elev. gain. Hikers must be in shape to attempt the rugged, steep descent to the North Fork of the American River. Meet at 8 a.m. @ Roseville Park & Ride on Taylor Rd. (off the I-80 Eureka Rd. exit). Leader: Alex MacCollom 916.978.9470 (call before 9 p.m.).

Day Hike (2A) Sacramento River Bend (Yahi)
Hike through varied terrain north of Red Bluff. If there’s a chance of sunshine we’ll meander up river past Yana caves, rolling hills of wildflowers, lush riparian habitat and dramatic bluff-top views almost to Inks Creek and back. Expect to encounter poison oak, too, as well as some rocky and muddy stretches (long pants, long sleeves and sturdy boots highly recommended) on this 7 mile, 5 ½ hour hike with a lunch stop at Massacre Flat gravel bar. Meet 8:30 a.m. @ Paradise Save-Mart or 9:00 a.m. @ Chico Park & Ride for the 50-mile drive to Bend Bridge by 10:15 a.m., then to the Perry Riffle trailhead by 10:45 a.m. Don’t forget your camera! We’ll hike approx. 4 miles from Foresthill Divide to Confluence Area on three trails listed above. Car shuttle required to return to starting point. Nice views of Middle Fork and wildflowers if timing is right. After initial uphill, mostly downhill on narrow trails. Bring lunch, water, and essentials. Day Hike (1A) Historic Sacramento Tour (Seniors)

Marjorie & Clare LeDonne will lead an urban hike covering little known historic events (our own OK Squatter’s Rights shootout) in the area of the present Federal Courts Building, followed by a walk through Old Town and again little-known facts about events and people. Approximately two hours, followed by optional lunch. Meet 10:00 a.m. @ Federal Courts Bldg (5th & I Street). Have photo ID. Public transportation a good idea. May is warm, have water. Moonlight Paddle (1A) (Yahi)

Bring your own canoe or kayak for a leisurely 3-mile flat-water paddle on the calm cool waters of the North Forebay, Oroville.  Learn about the Ponzo Illusion, constellations, and satellites. You must have warm clothing, a flashlight, and wear PFD to attend. Limited to the first 12 boats to sign-up with the leader. There is a $4 entrance fee. Day Hike (2A) Hetch Hetchy Reservoir

A jointly sponsored outing with Tuolumne Group, Sierra Club and Restore Hetch Hetchy.  A short talk from Ron Good, executive director of Hetch Hetchy followed by a hike from the dam, through a quarter mile tunnel, to the trail to Wapama Fall.  On the way, we shall enjoy the sights of many species of wildflowers in full bloom and marvel at the misty flow of the seasonal Tueeulala Fall cascading down the sheer sides of the canyon wall.  Further up canyon beyond Wapama is Hetch Hetchy Dome and across the reservoir, Kolana Rock.  Total roundtrip distance is 6 miles and hikers are warned to be prepared for watery stream crossings and a drenching if they want to cross the footbridge crossing to the east side of Wapama Fall.  Bring lunch, water, and hiking staff and sandals for stream crossings.  Meet at Laveroni Community Park in Groveland at 9 a.m.  For more detail contact leader.  Leader:  Frank, at (209) 962-7585, or email,  frank-oyung@sbcglobal.net

We will cover about 10 miles & 2,000’ of elev. gain in this volcanic wilderness located in the Mendocino Wilderness. We will be able to view Sutter Buttes, Mt. Shasta, and Mt. Lassen. Day Hike (3B) Del Valle Regional Park

For retirees, slackers, and others.   Continuing my fascination with areas west of the Altamont, we will hike 10-12 miles around another fake lake in the rolling hills near Livermore.  We will follow Ridgeline and East Shore Trails, to take advantage of the ridge top viewpoints and lake side habitat.   Hopefully we will catch the tail end of the spring wildflowers, and miss the the summer heat of this sparsely shaded area.   We will keep an eye out for Derek's catamount.   Bring lunch, beverage, appropriate clothing, $$ (for carpooling and parking fee), and other essentials.  Modestans meet at No. Modesto Park'n'Ride on Sisk Rd., (near Vintage Faire Mall) at 8:00 am.  Others call email for alternative meeting place.   Sign up with Yokuts leader Elaine Gorman, 209.524.7630 or goford@sbcglobal.net.

Camping Trip Sugar Pine Point State Park (Singles)

Join in! Camping under the pines at Sugar Pine Point campground at Lake Tahoe for Memorial Day weekend. Cost is $40 per person, plus a meal assignment. There are a number of great hiking trails, as well as lake activities. We’ll organize group breakfasts and dinners, so you only have to cook once! Party around the campfire at night, and bring a beverage to share. We’ll also provide information on carpooling. If you ever wanted to learn what mountain biking is all about, this is your opportunity.  We’ll do a short out and back section along the Middle Fork of the American River.  The trail is primarily a flat dirt road with a few short, but steep hills.  Great views of the river.  Approximately 10 miles of riding. Must wear bicycle helmet.  Ride is “geared” to ages 18-40s, but everyone is welcome. Backpack (2B) South Yuba River (Singles)

This is a one-night backpack trip along the beautiful South Yuba River near Nevada City. Total of 9 miles with 1,200’ elev. gain. It is fairly strenuous. We will hike into the Primitive Campground (a self-composting toilet and picnic tables have somehow been placed there). It is a beautiful setting overlooking the river. I ask everyone to bring hors d’oeuvres to share to create a community dinner. You will need to provide your lunch for the hike in and breakfast the next day. We’ll probably have a campfire. You will need to give me $5.00-$10.00 so I can pay BLM for the use permit. We will try to leave on Sunday by noon. Call for reservation. Hike along a portion of the Western States Trail that goes over the Mt. Quarry Bridge or “No Hands Bridge” and along portions of the Mt. Quarry RR route to Auburn. We will cross a stream below a year-round waterfall en-route. Nice views of the river. Bring lunch, water, and essentials. Meet 9:30 a.m. @ Burger King (on Lincoln Way at Foresthill Exit off I-80). Day Hike (1A) Roseville Bike Trail (Singles)

Hike on a bike trail in scenic Roseville. 5 miles and less than 100’ elev. gain. Meet 10:00 a.m. in the parking area near the red sculpture to the right of Roseville’s 24-Hour Fitness on Sunrise and Eureka. After the hike there will be an optional lunch stop at the Thunder Valley Casino (a 20 minute drive from the trailhead) buffet. Cost is less than $10 for a very wide, award-winning selection. Lake Paddle (Class I) Lake Tahoe (Sacramento)

This is a Class I kayak or canoe paddle at Baldwin Beach Park heading east to the Nevada Beach. We can skirt the shoreline. Must be able to paddle at a moderate pace all day. Day Hike, Bothé-Napa/Bale Grist Mill State Park (Singles)

We’ll start or end with a tour and demonstration of the Grist Mill ($2 per person entrance fee), depending upon the mill’s schedule. Our hike includes the pioneer cemetery and a mixed forest of Redwoods, Bays and Madrones to Coyote Peak with some nice views of the Napa Valley. The hike is ~8-10 miles & 1,000’ elev. gain.
